The Fire Is Not Finished
I can still remember sitting in Steve Hill’s library, surrounded by books filled with the stories of men and women who had walked with God and witnessed extraordinary moves of His Spirit.
There were biographies of revivalists, accounts of great awakenings, and writings from men whose lives had been marked by prayer, sacrifice, and an unshakable burden for souls. Some of these names were familiar. Others I was discovering for the first time.
As I opened those books and began to read, something stirred in my heart.
These weren’t simply stories about the past. They were testimonies of what God had done through ordinary people who had surrendered their lives to Him. Men and women who believed the promises of Scripture, who paid a price in prayer, and who dared to believe that their generation could experience an extraordinary visitation of God.
I found myself captivated by their stories. I wanted to know what they knew. I wanted to understand how they prayed, how they lived, and what had shaped their convictions.
More than anything, I wanted to see God move in my generation as He had moved in theirs.
Those hours spent reading in Steve’s library helped shape my life and ministry. Eventually, that same hunger would lead me to write Trail of Fire, tracing the footsteps of revivalists who had gone before us.
But somewhere along the way, I discovered something far more important than history.
The God who moved then is still moving today.
Why Voices of Awakening Exists
I believe one of the greatest dangers facing the Church is not that we will forget the names of the great revivalists, but that we will forget what their lives teach us about walking with God.
We can become so occupied with what God is doing around us that we neglect to learn from what He has done before us.
The stories of revival remind us that God has never been limited by the darkness of an age, the weakness of an individual, or the impossibility of a circumstance.
When we read about these men and women, we discover that they faced many of the same struggles we face today. They encountered resistance, disappointment, spiritual apathy, and seasons when the Church seemed powerless.
Yet they prayed. They persevered. They preached Christ. They believed God.
And history records what happened when the Holy Spirit moved.
That’s why we created Voices of Awakening.
Not to build a museum of yesterday’s miracles, but to inspire a generation to seek God for a fresh move of His Spirit today.
We want to preserve these voices, share their stories, and place their writings into the hands of pastors, leaders, and believers who are hungry for more of God.
We don’t study revival history simply to celebrate what God has done. We study it to stir our faith for what He can do again.
And I believe the next chapter is still waiting to be written.
A Library Passed From One Generation to Another
Steve understood the value of a good library. He knew that the books we read have a way of shaping the people we become.
Over the years, people would often ask him what they should read and how they could begin building a library of their own.
Steve kept a list of recommended books on his phone. When he encountered someone who was genuinely hungry to grow, he would share that list with them.
It’s such a simple thing, but it meant a great deal to me.
I’ve guarded that list for years as a precious reminder of Steve and the investment he made in my life. Occasionally, I would share it with friends who carried that same hunger to know God and understand the history of revival.
Over the years, I also discovered a reading list from Leonard Ravenhill, another man whose passion for prayer, holiness, and revival challenged a generation.
Now, I’ve brought those lists together here at Voices of Awakening.
What was once a personal recommendation passed from one hungry heart to another is now available to anyone who wants to begin the journey.
Steve Hill’s recommended reading list and Leonard Ravenhill’s recommended books form the foundation of the library we’re building here.
My hope is that you’ll discover something in these pages that will mark your life as deeply as those books marked mine.
Perhaps you’ll find a biography that challenges the way you pray, a sermon that awakens a fresh burden for souls, or a book that causes you to reconsider what God could accomplish through a fully surrendered life.
Read slowly. Read prayerfully. Don’t simply collect information about these men and women. Allow their testimonies to challenge your own walk with Christ.
And remember, the goal is never to become another Finney, Wesley, or Ravenhill.
The goal is to become the man or woman God has called you to be, fully surrendered to the same Holy Spirit who empowered them.
Now It’s Your Turn
There’s an entire generation that needs to hear these voices.
We live in a time when information is everywhere, but spiritual depth can be difficult to find. We have more access to sermons, books, and resources than any generation before us. Yet access alone does not produce hunger, and knowledge alone cannot produce revival.
We need more than an appreciation for the past. We need a fresh encounter with Jesus Christ.
That’s my prayer for Voices of Awakening.
That somewhere, a young pastor will discover a forgotten sermon and find fresh courage to preach the Gospel. That a believer will read the testimony of an intercessor and be drawn into a deeper life of prayer. That a new generation of revivalists will discover that the same God who answered yesterday’s prayers is still listening today.
The stories are theirs. The responsibility is ours.
I want to invite you to take two simple steps.
First, subscribe to Voices of Awakening. Join us as we rediscover the people, messages, and moments that have shaped the history of revival. We’ll continue sharing stories and resources designed to stir your faith and encourage you to pursue God wholeheartedly.
Second, explore the library. Begin with Steve Hill’s recommended reading list or discover the books Leonard Ravenhill encouraged others to read. Choose a book. Open its pages. And ask the Lord to use what you discover to deepen your own walk with Him.
Who knows what God might begin in your heart?
Years ago, I sat in Steve’s library reading stories of men and women who had changed their world through the power of God.
Today, I’m inviting you into that library.
Because the fire that burned in their generation was never meant to end with them.
The fire is not finished.
